Anchorage Sports Association
Youth Basketball 7/8th Grade Boys
March 4, 1993
Parents and Players,
Welcome to another season of basketball! It seems like only last month that the last season was completed.
Although I have coached basketball at this level in the YMCA programs for 8 years, this is my first season of coaching in the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company basketball league. I have been affiliated with the Anchorage Sports Association as a softball player and board member since 1975 and respect that organization highly for its program quality.
There is some unknown territory for me, however. I am not sure what to expect as far as the caliber of competition we will face. While this team is made up of several players from our successful 1992-1993 7/8th grade YMCA group, I do not know how we will stack up in this league. The league is comprised of one "varsity" section and two "junior varsity" section. Each section will have roughly 10-12 teams. We will be in one of the "JV" sections (at the suggestion of the program director) because we are new to the league and need a season to establish ourselves. If we are too successful (??), we will be entered into the varsity end-of-the-season tournament rather than the JV tourney.
We have the Central Jr. High gym for practice purposes from 6:00 to 7:30 on the following Thursdays: Game schedules will be out soon.

My intention is to employ the same basic plan that we used in the YMCA program, using various zone defenses (including full court pressing) and want to implement some new offensive strategies. Because we're covering some new material and have new players, these practices are considered very important. Playing time per player is not enforced here, but I will commit to keeping it as even as I can provided that each player will commit to coming to practice and trying his best.
I'm excited about this new group and the new competition. Let's have a good time and play some ball! Please call me with your comments and suggestions, or if you need help with rides.
