Here is an interesting idea submitted by Ed Riley, author of the two online E-books on this site, "Coaching Youth Basketball". At the end of the season, why not prepare a short resume' for each of your players? Next season, when they try to stand out among all the others at tryouts, they could present this concise and neatly prepared summary of their experience and capabilities. Instead of hoping their future coaches can divine this information at tryouts, they can have it front of them in black and white (or whatever color you choose from your InkJet printer!).
You can copy this document and paste it in your favorite text editor. Add the information you feel is relevant and you will have provided a nifty and useful service for your players.
Name
Mary Doe
DOB: 8-28-87
Height: 5' 9"
Parents: John and Mary Doe
Home Phone: 987-654-3210
Previous Teams:
Positions Played: 1 - 4
Statistics: In the last 2 years Mary has averaged 10 blocked shots/game, 8 rebounds/game, 9ppg, 6 assists/game.
Individual and Team Awards: At age 12 Mary won Chicago's Nike 1-on-1 tournament for 12-15 year old bracket. over 100 girls competed. At age 13, Mary's 3-on-3 team won the Hoop City's 3-on-3 tournament at the NCAA Women's Final Four. In Aug. 2001, her team won the Greater Las Vegas Open against 15-24 yr. old players.
Strengths: Versatility, she can play 1-4 equally well. Best defensive player on Team Firepower against guards or forwards. 85% free throw shooter. Made 14 of 15 free throws this summer with your jv/varsity squad. Unselfish team player.
Weaknesses: Too unselfish a player. Because she never wanted to be labeled as a coach's kid, or ballhog, she would rather get the assist than make the basket herself. She will pass up good looks at the basket because of this. She is an extremely strong kid and her passes are bullets at times. An average player may have a hard time catching all of her passes, especially the "no look" passes.
Comments: Mary can be very anal retentive. If she does not understand something, she is going to ask questions until she does understand. She is not a natural athlete, so she has had to learn everything she knows the hard way, through repetition. But, she does learn!
