Coaching Resume'

Notice: This article was written by Steve Jordan, Coach's Notebook. Email the author at sjordan@alaskalife.net.

I decided to post my recent coaching resume' in the hopes that it might have an idea or two for other prospective coaches. Most coaches will list an annual summation of their teams and their win/loss records. I pointedly stayed away from that. The records belong to the kids, not you. What's important is what you can teach. If you have a job possibility on the horizon, I wish you the best of luck!

This resume' was written 9/20/00. Since that time I have coached at Bartlett High School a year as the head C Team Coach and assisted with the JV team. I also was the head coach for a U16 YMCA team and a U16 BCI team.

Introduction

I am seeking a position as basketball coach at Bartlett High School. Even though preferences may be given to employees of the Anchorage School District, my achievements and qualifications should merit consideration. I possess the skills and experience necessary to teach the fundamental skills that underly a successful basketball program. Perhaps more importantly, I have developed a coaching philosophy that not only fosters enthusiasm in each player, but also engenders parental support rather than antagonism.

Present Employment Information

I am presently employed by Phillips Alaska, Inc. responsible for the management of the company's computer assets. My scope of responsibility includes $7MM dollars of computer hardware and $2MM of software licensing and maintenance. My job also includes the disposal of used computer equipment. During the past two years, I have coordinated the donation of 1600 Macintosh computer systems and printers to local schools and non-profit agencies.

I also operate a business at home, S&J Publishing, Ink., which is source of income and resources dedicated to sponsoring teams and publicizing youth sports activities on the internet.

Relevant Experience

For the past two years I have served as a volunteer coach for the Bartlett Boys Basketball C Team assisting Coach Steve Stansbury. I have also volunteered time with the JV Team coached by James Perryman. My contributions included basketball instruction, statistics management and providing full input from practice planning to game strategy.

I started coaching basketball in a YMCA program when I was in high school. But in 1990, I began coaching more seriously, volunteering time for the YMCA, Anchorage Sports Association and the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company youth basketball leagues. Every year since then I have sponsored teams and directly coached players from the East Anchorage area. I enjoy watching my former players participate at the varsity level for East and Bartlett High Schools.

For the past four summers I have assisted the Bartlett baseball program as a volunteer assistant coach and as head scorekeeper, statistician and webmaster - visit http://www.alaskalife.net/sjordan/baseball/homeplate.htm

As part of my present job, I direct a team of contractors that performs computer repairs and installations. I have formally supervised as many as 20 individuals and have 20 years of supervisory experience and training.

Achievements

My proudest achievement is the creation of the Coach's Notebook, an on-line instructional resource for new basketball coaches. The site has been featured in Forbes Magazine as one of the "Web's Best" and has received awards for design and content. The Coach's Notebook has a world-wide audience and has recorded 400,000 visitors. In addition to fundamental skills, the articles discuss emotional topics such as character building, parent management and playing time. You may review my philosophies and teachings at hhttp://www.akcoach.com

While I do not believe in maintaining a personal coaching record of wins and losses (the game belongs to the players) the teams I have been associated with have been very successful. The results attained by the Bartlett Boys C Team over the past two seasons attest to the quality of fundamental instruction and teamwork learned and demonstrated.

I am also proud of my long relationship with the YMCA youth basketball program. Through the YMCA, I have worked with some of Bartlett's seniors since they were in grade school. Other benefits include relationships with coaches, officials and administrators who are active in high school sports.

Summary

I have felt honored to be a part of Bartlett High School's program for the past two years. I wish to continue my relationship with the school and it's student athletes. If the Bartlett administration feels other applicants for open coaching positions are more qualified, I will again volunteer my time to the basketball program.
